Champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (59-2-2 39KOs) defeated John Ryder (32-6 18KOs) by wide unanimous decision. Official scores were 120-107 and 118-109 twice. The fight started in typical Canelo fashion by easing his way into the fight. Canelo busted up Ryder's nose with some sharp combinations in the 3rd round. Ryder bleeding heavy from the nose, had no answers for Canelo's attack. In the 5th, Canelo dropped Ryder with a straight right hand. The fight continued and Ryder mild success but was able to scare Canelo.
Canelo is tentatively scheduled to return to the ring on September 16th. WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Dimitri Bivol is the frontrunner to land the fight in a rematch. Bivol defeated Canelo by unanimous decision on May 7, 2022. Mandatories challengers David Benavidez (WBC Interim) David Morrell (WBA Regular) and William Scull (IBF) all would like an opportunity to face Canelo next.
Undercard Results:
● Julio Casar Martinez (20-2 15KOs) defeated Ronal Batista (15-2 9KOs) by 11th TKO to retain his WBC Flyweight title . Batista boxed and counterpunched well early in the fight. However at the end of the 4th round Batista was deducted a point for hitting after the bell. In round 7 Martinez scored a knockdown but Referee Celestino Ruiz missed the call. The replay confirmed that the knockdown was good and the ruling was overturned. This win sets up Martinez for an Flyweight unification fight next.
●Gabriel Gollaz (27-3 16KOs) edges out Steve Spark (16-3 14KOs) by Split Decision in a back and forth war! Official scores were 96-93, 95-94 Gollaz and 95-94 Spark. The fight was fought on even terms until Gollaz scored a knockdown in 6th with a flurry of punches. Spark bounced back strong in the 7th while hurting and out fighting Gollaz throughout the round. Spark finished the fight out very strong. LDUBB Boxing scored the fight 96-93 for Spark.
●Nathan Rodriguez improves to (11-0 7KOs) with Majority Decision victory over Alexander Mejia (19-6 8KOs). Official scores were 95-95 even and 96-93,96-94.
●Former Light Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk (19-1 15KOs) stops Ricards Bolotniks (19-7-1 8KOs) in the 6th rround. Gvozdyk landed a big right hand the hurt Bolotniks. A follow-up volley of punches dropped Bolotniks who beat the count. Referee Celestino Ruiz did not like what he saw and stopped the fight at the 1:56 mark
